Educators like Clyde McBride, who teaches agricultural science on the Navaho reservation in Kayenta, AZ and others are spreading the word about the benefits of a vocational education and careers. They are encouraging and inspiring students to learn about the rewarding and well paying work.

Clyde McBride is one of those everyday saints who, without much fanfare, go about the work of changing, and sometimes saving, the lives of children. He teaches agricultural science on the Navajo reservation in Kayenta, Ariz. He’s a memorable-looking fellow, with his cowboy hat, horsehide tie and a body like a giant sack of flour perched on tiny toothpick legs. His most notable characteristic, though, is his persistence. When a new school superintendent arrived in town a few years ago, McBride parked himself on the guy’s doorstep. “He came in and gave me the ‘I have a dream’ speech,” says superintendent Harry Martin. “I told him I’d think about it, but he wouldn’t let me think about it. The mikeroweWORKS Foundation, in partnership with SkillsUSA, is proud to announce a new scholarship opportunity for SkillsUSA members who have competed and placed first in their state association competition.
The scholarship is to provide support for SkillsUSA state contest winners who have insufficient chapter, school or community resources to participate at the 2012 National SkillsUSA Championships. A total of fifty $1,000 scholarships will be given away to help offset the costs of travel and to participate in the National SkillsUSA Championships.
